From Carrie in Wisconsin: Obamacare matters to me because at 33 years old I was diagnosed as a Type 1 diabetic. The kind which used to be refereed to as “juvenile diabetes” because it most often happens in children.
This will be with me until the day I die, day in, day out. No amount of diet change, weight loss, or increase in activity level will change that. Period.
I was fortunate enough to be employed when I went into ketoacidosis, and was able to have coverage for the four days I was hospitalized. I have been fortunate enough not to lose that same job these past two years, even after a merger and the typical merger-related layoffs.
Obamacare takes away my fear that my very ability to continue living is tied to my employment. If I lose my job (especially now, with my husband being unemployed) I would be able to purchase health insurance and not be denied due to my pre-existing condition…
So thank you to Obama and everyone involved in ensuring this law goes into effect. It is an important step forward for all Americans, even the ones who disagree and don’t understand that.
This is my story, exactly. Except I was 28. Three months later, I started working for the President’s reelection campaign, because this stuff is life and death. And without your health, nothing else really matters.
