A comment on my tumblr that deserves more attention. (emphasis mine)
David (CEO/Founder of Tumblr): I’m really sorry for how poorly I handled this…We have absolutely no interest in censoring users, though we will continue to police spam and illegal content.
Online communities like Tumblr and Facebook should absolutely be censored, no question. “Freedom of speech” does not apply when you use a company’s service to express yourself. If the intent of Tumblr and Facebook is to create an online forum where people feel safe expressing themselves, then censorship is absolutely necessary. If the intent is to create a space where anyone can publish any opinion whatsoever, then censorship isn’t a good idea — but I don’t think this is the goal of Tumblr/Facebook. They are companies. They ought to do whatever it takes to improve their products.
On the other hand, I also believe the internet itself should remain a place where speech is completely free. Anyone ought to be able to create a website to express whatever opinion they want, and anyone with internet access ought to be able to get access to that site. This does NOT mean anyone should automatically be included in online communities like Facebook or Tumblr. It’s more that I want to see packet filtering at an ISP level (or worse, “the great firewall of China”) to be outlawed.
The distribution of child pornography is the only reasonable argument I’ve seen in favor of packet filtering, and even in that case I don’t know if it’s enough to justify censorship of the internet itself. - The Mose
